Students in third through eighth grade who have received the Sacrament of Holy Communion have the opportunity to be altar servers. The children serve at Sunday masses, funerals and monthly school masses. They receive training on their duties and responsibilities from the parish deacons. This is a wonderful privilege for our students to demonstrate maturity and reverence as they serve in this ministry.
Altar server training is held at least once a year for recruiting new talent by the parish deacon and seasoned altar servers. Training is conveniently scheduled over a four weeks during one lunch period per week. The parish organizes an end of school year ice cream social for all altar servers to show its appreciation for the children's time and talent.
A kind note from an adult parishioner about our altar servers:
"I would like to express my appreciation to all of the Altar Servers who assist with the Funeral Mass. They are not only attentive, but they show complete respect and consideration for others. I have observed on numerous occasions the ability of the “veteran” altar servers assisting and guiding the new altar servers; who are unfamiliar with the Funeral Mass procedures. The bereaved family and the employees from the various funeral homes comment on how much they appreciate the students from Saint James the Apostle School helping out at the mass. They state that it seems to add a sense comfort and peace to an unsettling day.
I thank you again for sending me the help that is well needed and appreciated."
