This letter of goodbye is one of the most difficult I have ever had to compose. I am saying goodbye to a place I have called home for more than 30 years and all of you are saying goodbye to what has been your home for a good portion of your lives. I can honestly say there was never a day that I woke up and did not want to come to school nor was there ever a day that I was bored. Each day was exciting and rewarding, because each of you offered something special to the classroom. I have had many classes throughout my tenure at St James and each class had its own personality, its own energy, its own rhythm - that is what makes teaching so special.
I don’t think any of us have truly come to terms with the reality that we will not be at St. James in September; that reality will not hit home until the fall when we all go our separate ways. For the Eighth grade you are fortunate to have completed your elementary education at St James. I will miss seeing you return to St James to talk about high school, it was something I always looked forward to. However, I do know you are well prepared and ready for the next phase of your educational careers. For Seventh Grade, this may be hardest on you, finding a new school and starting over for only one year has to be disheartening. I know you will all find a place that suits you and that you are more than prepared for any challenges a new school may throw at you. I will miss seeing you graduate from St James as the Class of 2021. For the Sixth Grade, trying to find a new place to land for two years is not easy either. What I will miss most is that I will not get the chance to have you as my Seventh Grade homeroom class. I was looking forward to the enthusiasm and excitement you bring to the classroom. I know you too are well prepared for seventh grade and am confident you will excel at your new schools.
For me I am uncertain where I may land next year. I have not ruled out substitute teaching or possibly filling in for a teacher on leave. The right opportunity has to arise for me to consider starting over at a new school. My husband and I are seriously considering selling our home in Morristown and moving to Colorado sooner than later. There we will be close to our daughter and grandchildren. Our son is planning to move to California next spring so it does not make sense for us to be on the East Coast when our children and their families are on the West Coast.
Wherever I end up I will always cherish the time I spent at St James, it has been a wonderful place to spend the last 32 years of my life. I have enjoyed every minute I spent in the classroom with each and every one of you, current students and former students alike. Former students who have remained in contact reaffirm over and over that I have had some positive impact on them and prepared them well for high school. This is the greatest reward a teacher can receive and I thank you for sharing that feedback with me. I hope in some way you, my current students, feel the same way and that you too will move to the next level with ease. My one regret is that I will not get the chance to see the Sixth and Seventh Grades through their remaining Middle School years.
I wish each and every one of you happiness and success in all your future endeavors. I will think of you always and remember each of you and my time at St James with a SMILE.
